Many who research the phenomenon associated with unidentified flying objects and the probable extraterrestrial nature of some such events feel that there has been an unnecessarily high level of secrecy and deception. While some governments have released information about their several UFO experiences, the United States has been annoyingly obtuse about its participation in these events. Recently, highly credible associates of the government have spoken out in agreement with the UFO community that the truth should be revealed and a full disclosure be made of the details of these events and related programs.There is a growing movement to encourage full disclosure by assembling a preponderance of testimony from highly credible witnesses and participants. The Disclosure Project, whose spokesman is Dr. Steven Greer, is a movement whose proponents envision a utopian disbursal of extraterrestrial technology that would ultimately redefine human civilization. ...

None of my course work focused on the paranormal.I grew up near a famous UFO sighting in Wisconsin, so when I was in high school I visited the town and started talking with the witnesses and this hooked me. When I went to college I was studying psychology and I was interested in human perception and human beliefs systems and what makes people believe in odd things. I was presenting my research at symposiums and people would approach me and say, "I know this is not what you are really doing, but I think I saw something in the sky. Can you help me?" From there my research really branched out in all areas of the paranormal....
In a recent article I mentioned that MUFON were investigating some photos (of the STS-75 tether incident) that had received a special photo process.Shortly after the article appeared I received an email from the "International Director" of MUFON, James Carrion, asking "Who/what is your source for stating that MUFON is involved with a new photo enhancement technique for analyzing UFO photos as stated in the article.." and "I am not aware of any such technique."Firstly, I explained that the new photo process belongs to a scientist that is supplying images to me (displayed on my site), not MUFON as mentioned in some forums. I also confirmed the MUFON contact involved in the investigation.I received a further message from Carrion saying that my article was "misleading" as "this technique is being practiced by a single person who just happens to be a MUFON member but it sounds like MUFON as an organization endorses his methods. That is inaccurate. I would appreciate it if you could clarify that."My response was "I thought you guys worked as a kind of team, is this not correct?" and asked whether the MUFON member was doing something he shouldn´t and operating outside MUFON rules....
On March 13, 1997 a number of mysterious "orange" lights appeared over Phoenix, it was the largest UFO sighting ever and lasted for the longest time.There were more than 10,000 witnesses who saw these lights appear after 8.00 pm local time.A military witness claimed that the lights were not "flares" (as some officials had suggested), conventional aircraft or the military testing secret aircraft. Certainly flares could not hold that pattern for as long as they did, so the authorities who issued that statement were clearly lying. And if they were craft from our own planet, why put on such an "eye-catching" display? Those who saw the lights believed that they were part of one huge craft, which was triangular in shape and that areas of the sky were blocked out because of its size.However, as a result of examining the photo of the "Phoenix Lights" using a special process (that enlarges the smallest detail), it would seem that the lights may well have been individual craft flying in formation.You can examine the results of this special process on our webpage (CLICK HERE), which also includes images of the STS-75 tether incident (1996).If you look at the photo of one of the Phoenix Lights that has been enlarged with this process, you can see what might be possible "Porthole Windows".As for part of the sky being "blocked out", this could be due to the lights themselves, or the effect of some propulsion system on the craft?Although this new process is helping to reveal detail that was previously impossible, the results still depend on the quality of the original photo, and as we all know, these are generally quite poor.There have been a number of requests to use this photo process on the "Roswell" incident (along with other cases) and I´m pleased to say that those involved with this project have already been working on that. On September 17 of this year, Jairo Esparragoza managed to capture the flight of an alleged unidentified object that appeared to vanish after being struck by a bolt of lightning.The event was recorded between 6 and 7 p.m. using the camera of a Motorola Motoraz V3 cellphone as the witness drove along the Guarenas-Guatire Expressway in the vicinity of the Buenaventura Shopping Mall in the state of Miranda in north-central Venezuela."The human capacity for astonishment is unending," was the initial statement that opened Jairo Esparragoza's story. He explained that he began recorded the lightning bolts in the sky out of sheer curiosity, following a torrential downpour that drenched the Venezuelan capital and its environs for several hours. He became aware of the strange presence only a few minutes later."It rained heavily and there was considerable lightning. This drew my attention, and as I was stuck in traffic, I began recording what was going on. But after a while, I was able to see one or two orbs suspended in the sky through the telephone camera."...

MONETA -- Robert Swiatek hasn't unraveled the mysteries that shroud many UFO sightings, but he said ignoring them or pretending they don't exist could haunt mankind at some point."I don't know what's going on, but something's going on," he said Saturday at Smith Mountain Lake. "We're ignoring stuff that could be of vital importance."If Swiatek seems a little frustrated, he's not alone. He was among a small but earnest group of UFO investigators attending a conference hosted by the Virginia and North Carolina chapters of the Mutual UFO Network, known as MUFON, at the Mariners Landing Resort and Conference Center.The 39-year-old organization bills itself as the world's largest civilian UFO research organization. It's mission statement: the scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity.Swiatek, a MUFON board member who speaks frequently on UFO sightings, said UFO believers, such as former presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, take some ribbing for going public with their opinions. Kucinich's acknowledgement that he had seen a UFO "was ridiculed across the board," Swiatek said. "It hurt him ultimately."Swiatek said that while the general public has some interest in UFOs -- a recent national poll indicated that 14 percent claim to have seen one -- "they're not motivated enough to come to these meetings."But he maintains they should be....
In a "hot" new video appearing on YouTube, Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) stated "I understand we are under Martial Law, as declared by the speaker last night"Whilst this is something that you might expect the speaker (Nanci Pelosi) to declare and the Bush administration to desire, Mr. Burgess was hopefully using the term "Martial Law" in a figurative manner, in order to express his disgust (and that of many others) at the way in which this "bailout" deal is being conducted.George Bush has created many new executive orders during his term, enabling him to introduce Martial Law for a variety of reasons: A terrorist attack, civil disturbances, Flu outbreaks, weather related disasters and more. It is not impossible that he could declare the current financial crisis as a "National Disaster".However, the real problem lies with the Federal Reserve and the power they have to control the United States (and many other institutions around the world), including the political system of course.The Federal Reserve is nothing more than a private bank (with no reserves), run by people who used to be called "money changers" in bygone days. They may have a fancy title today, but their motives have not changed.These "money changers" have been around for more than 2,000 years, manipulating world events and money supplies, in order to satisfy their greed and need for power.Having the ability to control a country´s money supply enables them to dictate the destiny of others, by creating a false crisis in order to buy up failing companies at a fraction of their real value, which later become very profitable when they decide to increase the money flow again. This control is used on the stock markets, forcing prices down to make an attractive "buy", guaranteeing a very healthy profit in the future (and more control over the competition).We have seen these tactics being used for centuries, with "money changers" either using existing problems to make a profit, or creating them (including wars).A good example is the owner of a coin shop in Frankfurt Germany, whose sign over the shop was a Roman Eagle on a Red shield. In German "Red Shield" means Rothschild. The Rothschild Family (usually referred to as just the Rothschilds) is an international banking and finance dynasty of German Jewish origin that established operations across Europe. The beginning of the Rothschilds "fortunes" began during the early 1800´s, where Nathan Mayer Rothschild made huge profits from the Napoleonic wars and a somewhat dubious deal with the Prussian government.Their influence (and one could say their methods) are still very much in evidence today. Check out J.P. Morgan, their connections and the role they are playing in this crisis. We only have to look at those behind the Federal Reserve (then and now) to clearly see that the financial system is still run by "The Usual Suspects".The proposed "bailout" will not solve the problem, the problem is the system itself and those who control it, only by changing that will the situation improve. In the meantime we remain in the hands of the "money changers" and must whistle to their tune, whilst pretending that the paper they print is money!Martial Law is still a possibility, but the "money changer´s law" is the root of the problem and that is what needs our most urgent attention. But does anyone have the courage to take them on?
The truth is out there - and if a police officer, a politician and a pilot are to be believed, aliens are keeping a close eye on us from above. Dramatic eye-witness testimony was heard at a conference over the weekend which, delegates were told, provided "definitive" proof of recent UFO activity in the skies around north Dublin and Meath. Footage, filmed on a camera phone at 10.35pm on August 3 near Dunboyne was also played and replayed to over 70 delegates who attended the fifth Irish International UFO conference in Carrick-on-Shannon. The triangular shaped image, with lights at each point, which appeared to send a red laser-type light towards earth, drew gasps of amazement from the 70 or so delegates who attended the world premiere of the footage. A senior garda officer who was driving when he noticed the unusual light formation in the sky stopped to film it....
It may not be stuff of the X-Files, but a UFO-tracker is reviewing a report of a strange craft seen flying over Sarnia this summer. The unidentified flying object was reported July 20 at 9:30 p. m. Three people say they saw a white, square-shaped craft flying over an East Street apartment building. It was 30 feet wide, 10 feet high and made no sound as it moved east overhead. "It's a very, very, very unusual sighting," said Brian Vike, who catalogues and investigates UFO sightings on his website, HBCC UFO Research. The three witnesses said the object had a black stripe down the middle and was flying 300- to-400 feet off the ground, far too low for an aircraft, he said. "I'm not saying it couldn't be something from 'out there;' who knows," he said. "But when you start to give a description with markings on it, maybe it's something manmade."..
TWO birthday girls sparked a UFO alert after releasing flying Chinese lanterns at their party.Pals Rebecca Lever, 24, and Terri Riddell, 21, were stunned when neighbours bombarded radio stations and the police with calls about alien craft.Rebecca, from Salisbury, Wiltshire, said: “Before we set them off we joked that some people might think they were UFOs.” Paul Weeks and partner Claire Mullins were among those who spotted the mysterious silver and red shapes over Salisbury on Saturday night. Claire said: “There were three of them and they seemed to be flying in formation.“We listened but couldn’t hear any engines – it was like something out of the X-Files.”
A Houston woman believes she saw a sasquatch running from her property this summer, and she says she'll never forget it."I thought at first it was my son coming home from work," Delores Harries said of her July encounter, "but I realized it was the wrong time of day ... and when I opened the door my dogs went running by me and I heard a crash in the neighbours' bush."Her story attracted Houston-based UFO and sasquatch researcher Brian Vike, who says he believes footprints found at the site were left by a Sasquatch.Vike said he has seen other footprints around the Houston area that tell him the mythical creature not only exists, but is becoming increasingly visible in northwest B.C.He said there have been two sasquatch sightings in Houston this year and another in Moricetown, just west of Houston."It's a blast," Vike said. "I'm not a Bigfoot guy but hey, nobody else is doing it around here."He said the best account came from Harries, who says she opened her back door early July 25 to let her dogs in after they scratched at the door. Once inside, the dogs were suddenly alerted to something outside and ran back to the door.Harries said the doorknob was rattling at that moment.She let the dogs out again and went out on the back porch, and says she saw something on two legs running across her property."She is very credible about it," Vike said, adding that he found a sasquatch footprint in the area where Harries said she had seen the creature."There is one spot you can definitely see where I would say something heavy, not a cow, but something real large in size has made a print," Vike said. "The ground was really roughed up and whatever roughed it up really sunk down."Vike said he is not discounting the possibility that the sasquatch population in the area is on the rise.
ASPEN — A second Aspenite has reported seeing an unidentified flying object in the skies over Aspen in the early morning hours of Thursday.Dr. Patricia Hill, a psychologist and host on GrassRoots TV, said Friday that she saw an object moving through the sky over her home in Meadowwood that morning after being awakened by what she described as “some big, bright lights, kind of casting about toward the tops of the trees.”“I thought at first it might be a car,” she said. “I thought maybe there was a road [up the hill from her home] that I didn’t know about.”Then the object, which had moved past her house, came back, “but higher,” she recalled. “And I thought, ‘Cars aren’t up in the sky.’”She said she was not sure of the time of her sighting, but she believes it was at about the same time that Fay Franklin, of Brush Creek Village, reported seeing lights in the sky above her home.Franklin spotted the lights around 4 a.m. after being unable to sleep and getting out of bed, and said they looked “like somebody was shooting fireworks off up above.” But the object soon took on the appearance of a trumpet, she said, with colored neon lights surrounding it.Hill, who said she has been interested in UFOs for some time and has served on scientific panels discussing the topic, did not call police. She described the object as glowing with white and red lights, and said she reported the sighting to a friend and fellow UFO researcher at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Leo Sprinkle. Sprinkle could not be reached for comment.Franklin called the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office around 1 p.m. Thursday to report the sighting, and county dispatchers said they had not received any other reports. A Pitkin County Sheriff’s deputy, Jim Hearn, reported seeing lights in the sky while on night patrol, somewhat earlier than Franklin’s sighting but in roughly the same place.He said, however, that what he saw was a plane.The Pitkin County Airport flight control tower did not return a telephone call concerning the sightings.
In two weeks, UFO enthusiasts will flock to Jersey City for the 2008 Culture of Contact Festival, a three-day conference on alien encounters and extraterrestrial life. But don't expect any conspiracy-filled Powerpoint presentations or Roswell-style alien cosplay. Instead, the festival will focus on extraterrestrial-inspired arts, what an Obama presidency would mean for UFO disclosure policy, and whether the ancient gods were, in fact, visitors from outer space.The Jersey City festival brings together UFO researchers and self-professed alien experiencers to share their stories as well as alien encounter-themed art, film, music, and technology. Included among the speakers are Stephen Bassett, a lobbyist working to change the government extraterrestrial disclosure policy, and William J. Birnes, host of the History Channel's UFO Hunters.But the overarching theme of the conference is "Mythology Is Reality," and it'll focus on the possible intersection of the extraterrestrial and the divine. Looking to phenomena such as the Egyptian Pyramid Texts and the Hopi belief that their ancestors came from the stars, participants will explore the possibility that human mythology is actually a factual record of ancient alien encounters:From antiquity we have these stories of beings descending from the heavens and imparting huge leaps in culture and knowledge upon the people of all countries—ALL countries, think about that—but because we’ve devolved into materialist rationalists in total control of our domain, that fact is completely unacceptable to us, so it is disregarded as primitive mythology.Our goal is to give life back to the supposedly unreal timeline and show how only the reintegration of this line into factual history completes the distorted picture of humanity. We will demonstrate through artwork, film, and music, as well as talks from alternative historians and present-day experiencers of these beings who descend from the sky, that these “myths” are really factual explanations of nonhuman contact events stretching from the gods of antiquity to the alien abductions of post modernity.The festival runs from October 16-18. Some residents from across the Panhandle noticed an addition to the night sky Saturday."We have had reports that there was something in the sky," a Donley County Sheriff's Office employee confirmed. "We were thinking it might have been a weather balloon.""We've been getting a lot of calls, too," said Steve Bilodeau, a hydrometeorological technician with the National Weather Service office in Amarillo.But don't be alarmed, he said. It didn't appear that the object slowly floating through the Panhandle skies was an alien spacecraft."It's something, but it's not one of ours," Bilodeau said, regarding speculation the object was a weather balloon.Instead, NWS officials, who also viewed the object, said it appeared to have been a retrievable balloon launched from Fort Sumner, N.M., by NASA.Whatever the object was, it was floating southeast across the region and people from Amarillo, Dawn, Clarendon and Childress called to report it.The balloon is similar to a weather balloon, but unlike the NWS balloons, it is actually remote-controlled, can adjust its own speed and performs a variety of instrument readings, Bilodeau said.The last balloon that was launched from Fort Sumner and landed in the Panhandle turned out to be the size of a boxcar, he said.Normally, it's difficult to see the balloons because they're 35,000 to 40,000 feet in the air."You have to have the right reflection to even see them," he said.
A RADAR supervisor who tracked a "squadron" of UFOs from RAF Sopley is to talk publicly about the episode for the first time.The sighting, alleged to have been hushed-up by the RAF, took place in 1971.Radar supervisor, Wing Commander Alan Turner, 68, will tell the UFO Data Magazine annual conference in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, about his experience. He will be one of 10 speakers at the two-day conference on October 25 and 26, joining people such as Rosalind Reynolds who claims to have been abducted by aliens in September 1983 and Kevin Goodman, an expert on UFOs at Warminster.Wing Cmdr Turner, who was made an MBE in 1983, lives in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. A career RAF officer, he and colleagues were stunned when 35 fast-flying objects appeared on their screens one day in July 1971.He said: "Somebody shouted, What the hell was that?' It was electric. I'd got a spare console and watched for 20 to 25 minutes."He saw was a series of radar blips one at a time travelling south-east at regular six- or seven-mile intervals, climbing fast for about 40 miles before disappearing.He calculated their height at 3,000ft climbing to "in excess of 60,000ft, the instrument wouldn't read any higher".He knew he was not watching military aircraft. "The only craft with that rate of climb were supersonic Lightnings but they wouldn't have held such perfect formation. They're also noisy," he said.The phenomenon was also witnessed by four civil and six military controllers. Afterwards everyone had to write a report. Wing Cmdr Turner says six military radars in southern England picked up the craft, as did operators at Heathrow.He also instructed a Canberra aircraft returning from Germany to turn around and investigate. "There was something about a quarter-mile away from him which, to quote him, was climbing like the clappers'. But he didn't see anything really, nor did his crew."Wing Cmdr Turner plotted the course of the UFOs. They travelled from near Marlborough in Wiltshire to near Alton, Hamp-shire, before disappearing.He said a few days later they were interviewed by two anonymous men and told not to talk about the incident. He kept quiet until 11 years ago.Was it UFOs? "They were unidentified, they were flying, and they were objects. I've got to keep an open mind."It's arrogant to believe that we're the only ones in this universe."

The Evening Leader has once again been besieged with calls and emails from members of the public reporting fresh sightings of strange lights in the night sky over North Wales.The bizarre objects were spotted by numerous readers in different areas of Wrexham last Wednesday and Thursday evening.One resident even claimed her television reception was affected as a result.The sightings come exactly a week after the Evening Leader was handed footage of slow moving lights, arranged in a triangular formation, over Rhos.The latest reported incidents add fuel to claims Wrexham is now the region's number one UFO hotspot.Paul Griffiths, of Gwalia Terrace, said he had spotted three red lights over Pen-y-Cae on Thursday, September 25, just before 8.10pm, along with his wife and son.He said: "At first we thought they were stars but when I looked around there were no other stars in the sky as it was cloudy."I believe we have viewed what others have viewed over the same area in the past week – unexplainable red lights in the sky over Rhos, Johnstown and now Pen-y-Cae areas."Meanwhile Beverley Davies, of Ponciau, reported seeing the same lights over her village at around the same time.She said: "I was letting the dog out into the garden when I saw a bright red light and when I looked up another two red lights were following it, so I called my husband Heath to come and take a look. "We watched and after a few minutes as they started to form into a triangle."We did not hear a noise like it was an aircraft. It was the strangest thing we have ever seen. Then they just moved across the sky in the triangle."The lights were also spotted the previous night – Wednesday, September 24 – by a number of residents in the county.Peter Davies, of Ponciau, said: "I saw the UFOs over the Rhos village at 8.15pm on Wednesday, September 24 – they were travelling at the pace of a helicopter, yet there was no sound to suggest they were helicopters."Me and my sister-in-law watched as the glowing red lights, five in all, sped off across the Pen-y-Cae mountain."Zoe Morris added: "We saw five flashing lights around quarter past eight around Ponciau. "Three were making the V-shape and the other two were travelling much faster. We also lost reception on Channel 4."Sceptics say the lights are nothing more than so-called Chinese lanterns, claims backed by rugby player Simon Hughes, of Rhos, who contacted the Leader on Wednesday evening.He said: "To put everybody at rest about the UFO sightings – they are definitely lanterns. I saw four in total, three were in the triangle shape that everybody is seeing and there was one on its own only about 30 to 40 feet up."You could see very clearly the flame and the lantern shape. It went down in a field at the top end of Pen-y-Cae. There were several people that saw this as we were rugby training for Rhos."
I AM currently in the process of completing a second volume of Haunted Skies, which catalogues all manner of strange reports made by the public since the late 1960s, including UFOs and their occasional occupants. Over the years, I have researched thousands of cases involving the sighting of strange phenomena, which, as a fresh-faced police constable back in the 1960s, I would have not given a second thought. Without doubt, the most interesting case I have ever come across happened during a spate of UFO activity on January 23, 1976, involving a woman from Bolton who was walking home from work past the local reservoir at 5.15pm when she received substantial injuries to her arms and teeth as a result of an unidentified object seen to hover overhead. Following her report to the authorities, she received a visit from two sinister men who threatened the family and herself to keep quiet. This may sound like a bizarre story from the X Files, but there is no reason to doubt that this account took place, though the identity of the “craft” and the men who came to see her have never been established. This woman wants to remain anonymous and get on with her life, but I believe matters like this should not be covered up. I would like to hear from anyone who has information on UFO sightings around the Bolton area. I am also seeking the current whereabouts of a woman from Ladybridge who contacted a UFO group after sighting a UFO? It wasn’t much, but added to what everyone said they’d seen and heard, it was enough to have the "thing" officially recorded as an unidentified flying object.So what the heck was it? An alien craft? A sea monster? A top-secret government experimental aircraft?Personally, even though I like a good mystery as well as anyone, my logical, left-brain hemisphere keeps telling me there has to be some sensible explanation for things like this.And maybe I’ve found one, thanks to a story I’ve heard from an elderly Halifax woman.Ruth Nevills, 85, used to be married to Lawson Doleman, a man who made his living from the sea.Ruth’s late husband was east coast operations manager for John Leckie Inc., once a major player in the fisheries.The year before Shag Harbour, Ruth was leafing through one of her husband’s trade magazines when she came across a story about a new device developed by a Scandinavian company for commercial fisheries.The thing looked like the upper half of a large, shiny globe fitted with sealed-beam lights inside."The idea was for fishing herring," she describes. "The mother ship would have this equipment aboard and it would be lifted off the deck, swung out over a school of fish and lowered into the water, so the light actually went under the water."When Ruth pointed it out to Lawson, he frowned."My husband said, ‘It’s illegal to catch fish with a light. It would be like jacking deer.’ "The year after the Shag Harbour incident, the pair made their annual visit to the fisheries exhibition in Lunenburg.Wandering around, Ruth came across a booth with the very same Scandinavian fishing aide she’d read about in the magazine.By the time she’d returned with her husband in tow, the chrome-plated device had vanished."My husband asked, but no one knew anything," she relates. "But it was there; I saw it!"Ruth is convinced the owner had discovered the thing was illegal and spirited it away. They're more likely to be your neighbor, the grocery store clerk or even your principal. Although most cults are simply harmless, new-age religions, there are some, however, that are remembered for their bizarre beliefs and psychotic behaviors.I, myself, was an unwitting participant in what was arguably a cult worship earlier this summer. I found myself among people gyrating uncontrollably, speaking in bizarre languages and even trying to raise the dead. When the meeting finally ended, the participants scattered just as quickly as they had gathered, going back into their daily lives as if nothing had ever happened. Luckily, I was able to make it out unharmed. But in the past, some poor souls haven't been as fortunate.Take the People's Temple, for example. Perhaps the most notorious cult of all time, the People's Temple was led by communist Jim Jones, who eventually fled--along with his following--to a community he created and named after himself--Jonestown, located in Guyana.Ultimately, after Jones abused his followers with huge workloads and poor rations, almost the entire community drank Flavor Aid poisoned with cyanide, resulting in a death toll of 918. Another notable cult that ended in tragedy was Heaven's Gate, known for meeting its demise in an attempt to board a UFO hiding behind a comet. The theory behind this action was that the world was soon to be "recycled" and that, if they did not board the spaceship, they would ultimately be destroyed. Interestingly enough, some members chose not to fly away on the comet. Instead, they have stayed behind and maintained a Web site so that more people can learn about the aliens "Ti" and "Do"--and perhaps fly away on the comet as well one day.Not every cult ends in the suicide of its followers, though--some prefer to inflict harm on others. The Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh actually launched what is known to be the first bio-terrorist attack on the United States by lacing the salad dressing at restaurants in Oregon, in an attempt to win a local election. They hoped that, by poisoning the general public, they would gain the majority vote.Bhagwan still exists today, albeit under a more peaceful name. Heaven's Gate still has the members who operate their Web site. And not everyone drank the Flavor Aid in Jonestown. Insecure Minds Wired for Pattern-FindingLarry O'Hanlon, Discovery News Oct. 2, 2008 -- A perfectly healthy human mind can trick itself into seeing things that are not there, and new research has exposed exactly the sort of conditions under which that happens. It turns out that the less control a person feels, the more likely they are to see patterns or make connections that don't exist. The good news is there is a way to fortify yourself against this sort of hard-wired self-deception. "It's true that having control is a big thing for most people," said researcher Adam Galinsky of Northwestern University. Galinsky is a co-author of a paper reporting on new experiments into the matter, which appears in the Oct. 3 issue of the journal Science. "We showed that it's a very significant problem." Previous research had hinted at the details of the strange human habit, said Galinsky. A study in the 1970s showed how during hard economic times people read more astrology books and columns (astronomy reading was unchanged, for comparison). There is also evidence that UFO sightings ramp up in times of high national stress.These phenomena are probably related to that found by Galinsky and lead author Jennifer Whitson of the University of Texas, Austin, under controlled conditions in the lab. Whitson and Galinsky designed six experiments in which some people were made to feel a lack of control and others were not. Then they measured the subjects' perception of images in pictures that contained both hard-to-see patterns or no pattern at all.
