Too hot for North Port Devilby Billy CoxWow, it’s hot outside. How how is it? It’s so hot, De Void is ignoring the thunderous clamor from fans to investigate a local ET report. It’s true. It’s just too hot. Too hot even for a quick drive down the road. To North Port. Where this, this, this encounter even has a name — the North Port Devil. And consequently, a bunch of other outfits have already beaten De Void to it. Like the Mutual UFO Network, which concluded “the events accounted by the witnesses is unexplainable.”Like B103’s “Big Mama & The Wild Bunch” morning show. Like NBC-2.Imagine being Michael Rowley or his 16-year-old son Shane. They move into this house in April — in North Port, remember, the foreclosure capital of the universe — and start seeing strange lights and aliens peering in their windows at night. One’s about 9 feet tall. The other is a reptilian looking humanoid with a heart-shaped head.“Wings — I haven’t seen the wings,” Michael told NBC-2, “but I know they fly.” Good god. But wait, just listen to how well the kid’s taking it. Shane’s incredible: “They kind of show up when they want. You get used to ‘em. It’s kind of creepy, though, walking around in the woods with those big eyes and stuff.”Creepy? How about a Sam’s Club supply of adult diapers? The aliens even leave footprints. You can see the photos at Rowley’s Web page. Better yet, you can buy a North Port Devil T-shirt for $15. Among other things. “My house and plaster of paris cast is for sale,” Crowley writes. “If no one buys my house I will do my best tho to now capture this flying dragon on film.”Yeah, real estate here may be a smoldering crater, but it’s hard to imagine a North Port Devil house staying on the market for long. As NBC-2’s Chad Oliver put it with such thoughtful eloquence last week in his exit: “So is this southwest Florida’s version of Area 51? Only the trees know for sure.” Obviously, De Void can’t sit this one out. But right now? It’s just too hot.
